Dataporn: Naked in front of the Deltasphere.
I like the nomenclature of “dataporn” but I feel like to use it properly we’ll have to make a very strong case, because “porn” and “data” are such seriously loaded (and potentially mis-understood) concepts. Are we interested in data to generate porn via 3d reconstruction for use in a similar manner to “Poser porn” or Second Life avatars designed for sexual activities, data that is porn generated by legit fucking in front of the Deltasphere, or a data-set that is pornographic in that the result is an obscene ammount of information? I’m not entirely sure the result can engage all of these simultaneously without very careful consideration, just due to the mechanics of each approach.
Also, the issue of manifestation: Using CD-ROMs to distribute the data-sets seems appropriate for several reasons. The “optical” nature of CD-ROM media for a good link between issues of authorship and viewing (implicit voyeurism of non-particpation). I think it’s also worth noting here that they wouldn’t be CD-Rs, and so the viewer wouldn’t be able to simply add their own data to a disc. To participate they would have to create their own entire disc. Optical media is also a dead format. Dead enough that there is not utility in using it as an authoring vehicle beyond it’s implicit value to the work, but still “live” enough that most people have a device that will read the discs. Also CD-ROM, in it’s itended form as developed (by Sony?), was created to buoy a distribution model for music which has since failed, but could easily be re-appropriated as a saleable art-artifact.
Evolutionary consideration: The CD format became the natural evolution of the “mix-tape” in the 90s with the introduction of the CD-R. The 90s was also the decade that saw the rise-and-demise of
Cyberpunk culture with the end of the BBS scene and birth of the Internet. CD-R killed cyberpunk?
What content will each disc contain? All the data-sets from all participants? Surely, they would all fit on a single disc. But in the interest of engaging the distribution model of commercial pornography (at least in the historical sense), the discs-and-sets could be devided amongst participants or into “scenes” (assuming some data-captures contain multiple people). Each disc could also containing serveral captures of the subject in various stages of undress to create a Deltasphere strip-tease?
